What Causes Peripheral Edema While On BP Medications?
I ve just started taking 20mg of amlodipine and 100mg of losartan potassium daily for lowering my blood pressure and insulin injections twice a day. I have developed peripheral oedema the last few days. Of course I have been sitting down longer than is necessary, marking and travelling long distance. Could the oedema be due to travel or the drugs? I m 62 years old, weighs 98kg and am 5ft 6 inches high. I have had diabetes type 2 for eleven years.
Hi, thanks for posting your concern. Presence of pedal edema in the backgroud of hypertension and diabetes may be due to several reasons including heart failure. However, in this context I think this is due to the side effect of Amlodipine. Switching to some other antihypertensive or adding diuretics may relieve the symptoms. So, I think you should consult your local cardiologist for further evaluation and if necessary treatment regimen can be revised. For any further questions, you can write back to me directly. Regards, Dr. Kaushik
