What Causes Persistent Cough Despite Taking Amoxicillin And Mucinex?

Hi, I have an upper respiratory virus and ear infection. I am on amoxicillin, a cough syrup with codeine at night, Mucinex, Advil Cold and Sinus all per doc last Thursday. I have a constant tickle in my throat that won t clear and is causing constant coughing. I sleep sitting up on the couch for no more than an hour and then end up with coughing that is both dry and productive. My chest feels tight and it is hard to get a good inhale because my throat/chest hurts and it causes more coughing. I use a lot of cough drops and have tried saline nasal spray and breathing in peppermint essential oil steeped in boiling water. What else should I try?

Hello,

You can go for a sputum culture and sensitivity and start antibiotics accordingly.

In most cases it will settle with antibiotics.
Sputum study for tuberculosis is required.

If tuberculosis is there, ATT( antitubercular treatment) is required.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
