What Causes Persistent Cough Despite Taking Zyrtec?

I ve had a cough (no congestion) for almost three months. My PCM prescribed me Zyrtec saying it was post nasal drip from allergies. Been a week and still the cough. I have no heart burn, so I don t think it is acid reflux. This started right after my annual Flu Mist vaccine. (I get the mist, not the shot) PCM said that is just a coincidence. I do not cough at night, only when talking or singing and I get the tickle. I do not smoke, never have. But I seem to cough like a smoker. What is the issue?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of persistent cough despite taking Zyrtec which is a condition known as severe upper respiratory tract infection. You may have lung infection or bronchitis. Need not to worry. Take expectorants. Steam inhalation is very effective for you. I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist without any delay . Doctor may order blood test , throat swab test or virus culture test. You should get an x ray of the chest and Immunoglobulin G levels checked for further treatment. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics amoxicillin or penicillin at least for 10 days along with decongestants and mucolytic agents . For now do warm saline rinses , take rest. Do warm saline gargles with pinch of salt water. Mast cell stablizers such as sodium cromoglycate is effective to prevent infection. You should avoid hot, sharp and spicy foods.
