What Causes Persistent Cough Despite Using Antibiotics?

two weeks ago I went to urgent care for a cough X 2 weeks. They said I had acute bronchitis and gave me an nebulizer with abuterol, and atibiotics. The next week I couldn t breath (also the coughing never stopped) and went back. My oxygen level was 88. I ended up being admitted to the hospital. I was discharged after 3 days with a rescue inhaler and Spiriva. Nothing has changed, it has been a week since I was discharged. I made an appt. with a pulmonologist but couldn t get in until next week. I bought a pulse oximeter and it fluxuates between 93 and89....My coughing never got any better.

1. As you have visited an ER twice but the symptom [coughing] is there for about 2 weeks, and there is no relief [with conventional line of treatment] thus following should be your approach:

i. check with a Chest specialist [pulmonologist] for necessary examination and investigations like
. Hb%, WBC for eosinophilia
. X-ray chest for TB, Pneumonia
. If other investigations are normal, HIV test [as routine]

PS. As a cough is there for > 15 days, thus this is an indication for immediate X-ray.

ii. The choice of antibiotic will vary from doctor to doctor, and from locality to locality

PS. Consult an ENT specialist [for quick visual examination of the throat] and for any necessary investigation(s)
