What Causes Persistent Sinus Infection, Mucus In Stool And Diarrhea?

I had a serious sinus infection and went to the doctor on 5-27. He prescribed Amos-clav 875-125 mg 1 tablet two times a day for 10 days. At the end of my prescription, I still had sinus and ear pains. I started to take another round of medicine about 3 days after the other ended. I started to notice mucus in my stools and then they turned yellow with diarrhea. I stopped the medicine and have been eating toast, yogurt and bananas. Any time I eat a normal meal I get diarrhea again. I have had this for 8 days now. I know I should have went back to the doctor but I thought I could take care of it myself. Could my medicine have caused my problems?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your history of taking a 10 day course of Amoxy clav, the problem of sinus infection and ear pain, development of loose stools with mucus, did not consult the Doctor again.
For the ear pains and sinus infection I would advise you the following:
One needs a combination of medicines for sinus infection which may cause ear pains too. Antihistamine or decongestant, anti-inflammatory, oral and topical steroids if need be. Consult an ENT Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation and CT scan and other investigations to pinpoint the cause so that an appropriate management can help you.
The diarrhea with mucus can be due to intestinal infection or Amoxicillin can cause GI disturbances.
Stool and blood tests will tell us whether this is due to infection or a side effect of Amoxicillin.
Get started with a probiotic.
Further management with antibiotic, metronidazole if your Doctors feels this to be important.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
