What Causes Purpura After Taking Plavix?

I have been taking Plavix for 14 years and am now having excessive blood collecting under my skin. It is not bruising (as once thought) because I accidentally got poked by a sharp envelope edge and out squirted blood from that dark area. Called my cardiologist and he said to take the medication every other day now. That did not cure the issue. I did it every two weeks but still issues. So now I am NOT gonna risk myself. Is it safe to stop? 14 years IS A long TIME.
