What Causes Radiating Stomach Pain After Taking Food?

my boyfriend has been complaining of a stomach ache every time he eats or thinks about food, it starts on his left side near his stomach and continues to go across underneath his ribs and then down his stomach area, he is 22 years of age and is around 5 foot 8,and weighs approx 13 and a half stone, as i am aware he has no family history of abdominal disease.
