What Causes Rectal Bleeding After A Colonostomy?

colonostomy 6 months ago . Rectal bleeding for a couple of weeks with soreness. STILL have gas pains. Does not matter what I eat. Very disturbing, including sleeplessness because of gas. This was directly after procedure. None before. Dr put me on antibiotics then a probiotic 2 months ago. No better. I am 75 years old. Have had 6(?) of these procedures since turning 50 and never had this problem before. HELP!

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is the six months gone since you had the surgery, and what the symptoms you have like pain, gas(Flatus ) and rectal bleeding so it may not be due to post surgery event, of course it an be due to the disease for which you did the surgery and you have not mentioned the disease here, it is just for your information the present symptoms could be due to something else and it can be infection, in second thought it can be due to diet, first you need to change the diet, and then you can ask to rule out the infection, you could discuss this with the surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

General Surgeon Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The common cause of rectal bleeding here indicates possible inflammation of the rectum or anal region from various reasons.

I would recommend in person examination with a consultant surgeon for proctoanoscopy evaluation and further guidelines of management in accordance to that only.

Thanks.
