Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Recurrent Fever Despite Taking Ibuprofen And Acetaminophen?
My 75 year old mother has had a fever for 8 days now along with fatigue and achiness, She has been tested for the flu and strep, negative results. On the 4th day, she went to her doctor and he said she had high levels indicating a urinary tract infection and was given Cipro. This past Friday, she was given another urinalysis and he said it was clear. She had a normal temperature at that time, but she has been taking fever reducers every 4 hours alternating between ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Her fever went back up Friday evening when she didn't take a fever reducer. My question is this: If her urine was clear, could she still an infection causes the fever, or is it likely another cause.
“As” per your clinical history your mother has pyrexia so I request you to make a record of her body temperature every 6 hours. As she has pyrexia so paracetamol is not the medication for it we have to go to root cause of it so I request you to do CBC with differential which will ruled out if any bacterial or viral infection present or not. Then do a malaria test to ruled out if it is not due to that. Then do a urine culture and sensitivity test to know if it is not due to UTI. So take treatment as per main pathological causes only and stop dispensable medications.
Hope that is ample to draw a conclusion in this regard.
Thanks
