What Causes Recurring UTI?

My daughter (24 y.o.) has a propensity for UTI's. She's undergone testing and the urologists says she has a very small urethra. These seem to occur approx. every 6 - 8 weeks. One doctor dialated her and we thought that would help. She is constantly taking AZO and other OTC meds. MY QUESTION: Can shaving your public area (which so many young women are doing) expose you to UTI's? Eyebrows and eye lashes protect your eyes . . . doesn't public hair protect your privates from bacteria as well? Just a thought??

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Recurrent UTI is due to narrowing of the urethra.

After a thorough evaluation with diagnostic cystoscopy and CT IVP, I would
recommend its permanent cure with surgery by an expert urologist.

So far as pubic hair is concerned, it does not work as eyelashes. If the cleanliness is not maintained over the regular shaving,it can cause infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
