What Causes Recurring Pain In Upper Back And Shoulders?

Hi I ve had re-ocurring back and shoulder pains for a while now. It is only the top parts of my back and shoulders that hurt (close to my neck) and these past 2 weeks the pain has been quite chronic (it lasts for hours) Idk if it has anything to do with me being on my menstrual cycle that has made it worse. Also, I had a mild panic attack at school on Thursday. Only my left shoulder was hurting that day and the pain radiated to the back of my neck. I began to freak out and think it could be symptoms of a heart attack, leading me to hyperventilate and gasp for air really loudly one time. However, I was able to snap out of it and tell myself this wasn t really happening. The pain then subsided a few minutes after. Also, I had an abortion in may and noticed that I didn t have these pains prior to the abortion. I have been very stressed and sad about the abortion since then. What is going on?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It may be due to nerve compression at cervical spine level.

For further assessment, you may require MRI neck, nerve conduction studies after spine surgeon consultation.

For pain you can take tablet acetaminophen.

Apply diclofenac gel or ointment locally. Heating pads will also help.

You may require physical therapy after physiotherapist consultation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam Kale
