What Causes Red Blotches On The Body After Using Betadine?

Following (aprox. 20min) cleaning a patient that had been prepped in betadine and had sorbitol-manitol for a TURP, I became extremely flushed (skin), felt very warm and had bright red blotches on both my arms, chest, upper back, neck and ears. I am in contact with the betadine prep daily and just puzzled as to what may have caused this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

You seem to be having an allergic reaction with hives. The cause of it may be due to betadine or other ingredients you may be in contact with or with food, perfumes or other chemicals.

You will have to take some Loratadine and diphenhydramine if the itchiness is too extensive. Sometimes a dose of steroids might be needed to help with the symptoms.
Meanwhile you will need to notice which might be the cause of the symptoms and try to identify the offending agent. If you are unable to identify the cause of the allergy then skin test can be done to help with this diagnosis.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
