What Causes Red Rash On The Bottom Of Feet?

I have a 13 year old son going through puberty. I have seen a rash on the bottoms of both of his feet in the arch area. It is red but does not itch. He plays basketball every day and is in basketball camp right now for 7 hours everyday. He also wears athletic shoes everyday.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that your son might be having fungal infection in the foot.
This is attributed both to the hormonal interplay during puberty as well as wearing of athletic shoes for longer duration.

Management includes:
1. Keeping the feet dry & avoid too much exposure to water or sweat formation.
2. Antihistamine preparations like cetirizine to reduce the itching sensation & provide symptomatic relief.
3. Application of topical antifungals like Clotrimazole (ointment or powder) to tackle the causative organism.

If symptoms still persist or aggravate further, then it will be better to consult a Dermatologist & get a proper examination done to find out the actual cause.
So that appropriate management steps could be taken.

Also he should avoid wearing tight footwear for longer duration, as it will cause sweating & predispose to fungal infections.
Wishing your son a Good Health.
Take care.
