Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my 10 year old son has cherry red lips that are sensitive and the tip of his tongue is red splotched. he states no headache, but has been tired and rubs his eyes often. his eyes look tired. two days ago he had pain in his right jaw/ear when eating. he has not reported that again and has been eating. eating, sleeping and drinking fluids.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Is it possible that your son took some medicine or ate some candy that has colored his tongue? Two possibilities come to mind:
- Herpangina is a viral infection that can cause sores on the tongue. They are quite painful and the sores are raised above the surface of the surrounding tongue. The sores may be red or red-white.
- Scarlet fever is an infection due to the Strep bacteria. It causes Strep throat, a skin rash, and a strawberry red tongue.
If your son has had this illness for longer than three days, I think it is time to have him seen by his primary care physician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
