What Causes Severe Chest Pain After Food Getting Stuck In The Throat?

Food got stuck and I tried to flush it down with water, I didn t think there was a complete blockage but there was and the water sat on top and pool in my throat. I began choking on the water that wouldn t come back up or go back down, I couldn t breathe and I panicked. The food shifted and the water flushed and I was able to breathe Again. I had severe chest pain afterward like someone was still stuck- it hurt to breathe and swallow. That has gone now but I ve been suffering headaches since. Should I visit my doctor or will it go away?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

I suggest you visit your doctor for a physical examination and possibly referral to a gastroscopy to see if there is a narrowing of your esophagus that could explain the food impaction. Chest pain after such an episode is common, so if you do not feel pain now, just take it easy and make an appointment with your GP.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anders Mark Christensen, General Surgeon
