What Causes Severe Depression After Using Citalopram-GM 20mg?

Hi I have been on Citalopram-GM 20 mg for 4 months now and cannot believe the weight I have put on. It has pushed me more into my depression amongst other things that I am suffering. How much weight does one put on when on Citalopram-GM 20 mg? I hate myself hate the way I look I want to get back to what I was 3 years ago. I am 48 years old and am in Menopause due to having a full hysterectomy 2 years ago. Should I go to my GP and ask to lower the does of my Citalopram-GM 20 mg to 10 mg? or should I get winned off them so that I don't end up gaining anymore weight. Please help and advice. Thanks Maria

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. A lot of individuals develop increase in weight while on Citalopram which is a SSRI drug. The drug is known to cause some increase in weight. If the weight gain is really distressing and you are not feeling good about yourself then in my opinion you should visit your doctor for revaluation and for replacement of drug with some other drug that doesn't cause weight gain. Medicines like Fluoxetine can be used in your case. The drug is considered as relatively safe for depressive patients who have increased tendencies of weight gain.
