Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Depression In An Elderly Person?
60 year old female super tired , all day, depressed, doesn't sleep hardly when does sleep only a few minutes at a time , heart rate average 90s,had been told of heart compression failure , was 225 pounds then now more than a year later at 128 pounds ,sometimes rather mean sprited or grumpy
With such presentations in my clinic, I would have first ruled out hormonal imbalance which happens to most women after post menopause. Diagnosis is confirmed by doing serum FSH and estrogen and medications will be given for hormonal imbalance like estrogen, progestin in lowest doses. An antidepressant is recommended like Sertraline and a calcium caps are required.
Regarding heart failure you can do an ECG and ECHO, and medications can be added as per reports only. Please let me know if you have further questions before meeting your primary care doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
