What Causes Severe Hair Fall While On Low Calorie Diet?

Hi Doc

Iam 36 yr old F. I am on a Low Calorie diet since past 5 months. I am now 88 kgs (was 103 earlier). In noticed hair fall since past 1.5 months. Hence started taking Vitamin E tablets USP400mg daily. Very slight improvement is noticed but not really. I just want to be sure if the dosage is ok for my weight and is there any side effect taking the tablet.

Thank you for your query on HCM.
Hair fall could be an alarming problem especially for self conscious women. The dosage of Vitamin E that you are taking is fine for your body weight. The problem most probably lies with your diet. When you compromise on your diet and make it low calorie diet, be sure you are not on a low protein diet. A low protein diet makes you deficient in the essential amino acids required for body functions and it does more harm than good. Hair growth can be stopped or impaired by deficiency of proteins causing profound hair fall. A few of the problems you may experience with deficiency of proteins are:
1. Anemia
2. Skin disorders
3. Signs of aging
4. Edema in the body especially in the legs
5. Hair loss and unhealthy brittle hair

Consult a doctor or nutritionist and carefully chart out a diet which is rich in proteins which is of paramount significance. Also start taking Vitamin C and zinc supplements along with your Vitamin E. Regular exercise is also very beneficial.
Be sure to ask if you have any more questions.
Take care and stay healthy. Good day.
