What Causes Severe Headache With High BP In A 73 Year Old?

Hi, my father of 73 had a bad headache and said felt generally awful on Sunday, then on Monday went to accupuncturist who wouldnt treat him as his blood pressure was 230 over 101. How does this happen and he still survives it? Is it a precursor or sign of things to come or is it nothing to worry about as the doctor gave him second tablet to take and it has come down to 145/80.

Hello,

Welcome to HCM and thank you for posting your query.
I understand your concern for your father.
Your father had an accelerated hypertension and that is when he got a headache.
There can be several causes for the accelerated hypertension including missing his dose of anti hypertensive medicine and sometimes the cause is not apparent. Complications can occur during an episode.
Glad to note that his BP could be controlled and that he did not have any complication.
It is very important that your father should take his anti hypertensive medication regularly and to follow the advice from the doctor regarding lifestyle, restricting salt and saturated fat etc. With care he would be able to avoid these episodes in most cases.
Wish your father good health.
You are welcome to ask if there are more queries.
