What Causes Severe Persistent Cough?

Thank you. For 3 months, I have been experiencing a very severe cough (starting out) so I went to my family physician who prescribed a Z-pak and cough syrup with codeine; I went back in 14 days (at the end of my prescription and he advised me to get a neti pot. I did that. I went to Urgent Care and the physician there advised me that I had allergies and gave me an Rx for amoxicillin and more cough syrup. I have had an x-ray of my chest which she stated is clear. I went back to my family doctor who told me I should have an MRI of my chest which I did and he said the report showed a little grey block at the top of my left lung usually caused from a virtus. He told me to take Zyrtec and drink more water. He also suggested that I have a goiter which is enlarged and it may be pushing down on my chest area causing a sensation to cough. So he prescribed an inhaler ProAir (not a steroid) doesn t seem to help either. Now, I still have the sensation to cough---I am of the opinion it is in my bronchial tubes and that I need a steroid like Advair perhaps........Anyway, I have searched the internet and am in fear that I have throat cancer or Barrett s disease.........I placed a call today to my gastrionologist but did not receive a return call for an appt. I have a chronic cough; hoarseness, a sore throat this evening (it comes and goes), can t sleep......I am a paralegal; my husband has left this earth; my oldest son who is an attorney has cancer, I take care of my 87 year old mother who is demanding, and I am stressed out. If you have any thoughts, please help me.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
hello, thanks for your query, your history reveals - MRI- no cancer , no tb. goiter present ( thyroid profile not done), I feel your cough could be due to allergic bronchitis. visit an ent surgeon for laryngoscopy to know the statu a of your vocal cards to know the cause of hoarse voice. presently you need not to be worried about your status of your health, just do one thyroid profile and laryngoscopy. do steam inhalation, prophylactic medicine like Montek- lc ( montelukast+ citrizine) one tab at bed time to prevent allergic cough and wheeze.hope I have answeed your query. all the best. take care.
