What Causes Severe Upper Stomach Pain?

I have been having severe pain in the upper part of my stomach that comes on suddenly.. absolutly drops me for about 45 mins and then is goes away completly. I found that one of the triggers might be popcorn but it only just started and I have been eating popcorn for a while now.. other foods have done this too me in the last couple of days but i haven't pinpointed them yet.. Any idea what might be causing this stomach pain.
