What Causes Severe Weight Gain After Taking Gabapentin?

I started on gabapentin for sleep disorder about 2 weeks ago. First 400 mg then 800 mg last night first time for 1600 mg. the 1600 really helped to sleep. I see by the scale I have gained about 8 pounds. Can I attribute the weight gain to the gabapentin at all. I cannot afford a weight gain and I am already obese. Any other suggestions for sleep problem with teeth grinding and leg pain?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The medication can cause weight gain but not normally at such a rapid pace.

Medications cause weight gain in different ways: (1) increasing appetite
(2)decreasing satiety or fullness
(3)altering metabolism
(4)decreasing energy levels and physical activity

If you are conscious about what you use and about your activity levels then you may be able to lose this weight gained and prevent any further weight gain.

I hope this helps
