What Causes Sharp Pain In Knee Cap When I Bend My Knee?

Hi, every now and then when I bend my knee at a sharp angle, I have a loud sharp pop that shoots pain down the center of my knee cap. It is a really sharp stabbing pain that lasts for about 20-30 min after the initial pop. It never pops again and quits hurting until it pops again. Could this be caused from a misaligned kneecap? Or something else?
