What Causes Soreness And Swelling In Back Of Neck?

My daughter complained of soreness/swollen in back of neck behind ear and down side of neck. Had her looked at and they said it was swollen glands and her throat was red. Did strep test (immediate) - negative. Has a temp of 99.8 and headache. The tenderness is worse now (4 hours later)… should I be concerned or let it run its course? could it be something serious?
