What Causes Stiffness In Neck Along With Pain While Swallowing?

Hi I Have extreme stiffeness at the righe side of the neck and it is painfull to bend my neck back and go fully forwards also when I sallow the back of my neck hurts but it is not my throat that hurts also my head feels thick I hope that this makes sense irene my email is icbf@big pond.com

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have stiffness in neck along with pain while swallowing. Well there can be many reasons for symptoms you mention in query like sore throat , viral pharyngitis , acid reflux , allergy or tonsillitis . I would suggest you to take liquid diet , do warm saline gargles and apply warm compresses on neck . Also avoid eating spicy and acidic food , take anti histamine like benadryl and avoid eating at late night . If condition doesn't get well then consult ENT specialist for proper examination . Doctor may order throat swab test , viral culture test and examination with laryngoscope . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics like amoxicillin along with anti inflammatory or may refer you to gastroenterologist for acid reflux problem .
