Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son and I went swimming in a lake today. a few hours later, he is complaining of a tummy ache. He hasn t thrown up but he is afraid he will if he sits up and walks around. He has held down some fluid and a few crackers. Reading about parasites in lakes just now has scared me. Should I take him to the doctor? We are supposed to go on vacation tomorrow and I m afraid if he contacted a parasite, we may not be able to go
HI...by what you quote I feel that your kid is having a prodrome f viral diarrhea as he might have swallowed some water from the lake which might have got some impurities.
Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.
I DO NOT THINK THIS IS RELATED TO A PARASITE.
If diarrhea starts - I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).
