What Causes Stomach Cramping And Chills?

My husband just came in from work complaining of stomach cramping since 1pm EST, he had to force his last bowl movement about 30 minutes ago and he has severe chills complaining that his finger tips are freezing. What could he possibly be experiencing and should we go to the ER?
