What Causes Stomach Pain While In A Soy-based Weight Loss Program?

I have been on Medifast, a soy-based weight loss program, for 5 months and have lost 45 lbs. I sometimes experience pain at the to of my stomach/fundus area that lasts up to 6 hours before subsiding. This doesn't seem to be a gastrointestinal problem nor heartburn. I have tried Rolaids, Pepto Bismol, and applying a heating pad. I take extra strength Tylenol and get minimal relief. As previously stated, the pain subsides eventually, but it comes on with increasing frequency. could it be the sugar alcohols or other ingredients in the diet bars?

Hello,
Congratulations on losing that weight!

Perhaps it is time to take a break from the Medifast program while you see your primary care physician for some tests. Your doctor may want to do perform an upper gastrointestinal exam to see if there is a problem internally.

Fast weight loss may also lead to kidney stones, gall stones and other painful maladies, all of which may cause pain referred or otherwise.

I of course cannot diagnose you, but I suggest you be evaluated for a hiatal hernia or other upper gastrointestinal issues.

Caution with too much Tylenol as this can cause liver disease when taken in excess and many people have suffered from this side-effect.

Although sugar alcohols can cause some distress, I believe there is some other issue at hand and encourage follow-up with your personal physician for some tests as mentioned above.
