What Causes Sudden Dizziness After Waking Up While On Xanax?
I am a 65 year old woman in reasonably good health and no history of any type of vertigo. But when I woke up today and sat up in bed, my head started spinning. No alcohol in the last several days, but I did take a Xanax last night to help me sleep, which I do about once a week. Any ideas on what’s causing this? I’m much better than when I first woke up and it’s not nonstop, but I’m definitely still dizzy if I move the wrong way.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
You are very nearly giving a description of what is called BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO (BPPV). Medications are poor at treating this type of problem. Find a neurologist who will explain the details of what this condition is all about (or write to me at: www.bit.ly/drdariushsaghafi) and then, show you how to do what are called the BRANDT-DAROFF EXERCISES. If you do these exercises you will feel a huge difference in your condition in a matter of days. But you need to do them very diligently at least twice daily for a couple of weeks then, see how things go after that without the exercises. If the condition returns, BACK TO THE EXERCISES. There are other treatment approaches. But PLEASE avoid the use of anything called MECLIZINE or ANTIVERT. Very poor medication for this type of problem and if you take Xanax you are not doing yourself favors at all and could hurt yourself.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
