What Causes Sudden Forgetfulness And Dryness In The Mouth?

My sister experiences brief episodes ( 30 seconds or so) where she stares straight ahead, does not speak, appears to have a dry mouth and looks at her fingers. She comes out of the episode unaware of the conversation she was having. What could this be? She is 69 years old.

Your symptoms symptoms could be caused by repeated seizures.
For this reason, I would recommend consulting with a neurologist and performing some tests:
- an EEG
- a brain MRI study
- thyroid hormone levels
- kidney and liver function tests
- fasting glucose
- blood electrolytes.
Starting an antiepileptic drug may be needed.
