What Causes Sudden Hiccups And Choking Up Clear Fluids?

My mother is in her 70's. She had an episode where she started to hiccup and choke up clear fluid. She said it was like experiencing a spasm that she had no control. This last for several minutes then she was fine. After it was over, she enjoyed dinner. Prior to the episode, she said she only had some coffee earlier in the day. She said it was not acid reflux.
