What Causes Sudden, Severe Stomach Cramps, Nausea, Vomiting, And Cold Sweats, Followed By Relief After Passing Regular Stools?

Hi, I am a 42yo female. I woke up in the middle of the night with bad stomach cramps. When I went to the toilet, I couldn’t pass motion immediately but it felt like I needed to badly. I kept regurgitating and wanted to vomit and pass motion simultaneously. The pain was excruciating and I experienced the below: - 1) shivering and trembling 2) cold sweat, eyes kept shutting tightly uncontrollably 3) breathlessness 4) leaning forward made the stomach pain worse I was completely drenched in cold sweat and due to the intense pain I unknowingly broke out in tears. I vomited a little of just fluids, and eventually cleared my bowels after ~ 15mins (regular stools, followed by some soft stools and ended off with just fluids gushing out like a tap). I felt almost completely OK immediately after that, with just a slight churning of the stomach. I had the below food earlier in the day: - Breakfast: my daily peanut butter spread on bread (2 slices) Lunch: homecooked pork, bitter gourd with rice ~ 5pm: A cup of Nestum cereal (3 heaped spoons) Late Dinner: Dined out, pork with rice I have never experienced anything like this in my entire life. What could be the cause? Thank you in advance.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

When the intestine is in severe spasm, the body can trigger a vasovagal response causing you to shiver, cold sweats and symptoms you experienced. Such intestinal spasm can occur due to something irritating the gut like high-fat meals, overeating late at night, or food borne toxin. Do not to eat anything that is stale, processed or packaged.

Eat home made balanced food that is freshly made to avoid acute gastroenteritis or food poisoning. At present, hydrate yourself and take ORS. Eat light for the next 24–48 hrs. Take rest. Watch for recurrence, fever, or blood in stools. To stay on the safer side, get clinically examined by a GP, if symptoms are persistent to detect viral gastroenteritis and gallbladder spasm or biliary colic.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
