What Causes Sweating And Lightheadedness While Having Nodes On Thyroid?
I treated for HCV in 2005 and achieved undetectable. However, the last several months I've been experiencing daily low-grade fevers, sweating (I'm past menopause) and the last couple of weeks, headaches. I've been in nursing homes and hospitals caring for my mother and have picked up what my doctor diagnosed as staff infection exhibited by sores on my right arm. I've also been feeling lightheaded. My doctor found nodes on my thyroid. Sound like a mess, right? What could be the problem, please.
Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello,
Sweating, lightheadedness, low-grade fevers and the presence of thyroid nodule are indicative of hyperthyroidism. Thyroid nodules are very common in women and the majority (95%) of nodules are benign. The nodule that you have seems hyperfunctioning (hyperactive) nodule. It means that it is producing excess thyroid hormones. Hyperfunctioning nodules are considered almost always benign. But it should be confirmed by checking thyroid gland function - T4 and TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels. Depending on the test results your doctor will define further actions.
If the test confirms, hyperfunctioning gland you should get treatment: either medical therapy, radioactive iodine or surgery. If the test results show normal functioning thyroid, the nodule should be biopsied (fine needle aspiration). Please make an appointment with your doctor (endocrinologist) to get thyroid function tests.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Malik
