What Causes Swelling And Pain In Shoulder After A Fall?

Hi Dr Rynne, 6 days ago I fell off my Quad bike and landed directly onto my shoulder. The pain was instant and it immediately began swelling up. There was no bruising and 6 days on although it isnt as swollen, I have limited range of movement and pain particularily on the top of my shoulder. I do however have full range of movement. Most of the time I have a dull ache and when I use my arm, I get a burning pain inside the joint. I get relief from Nurofen and Ibuprofen and if I support my shoulder under the elbow. When I sleep, I use a pillow to support my shoulder joint and I cannot sleep on the shoulder. I am looking to go and have an xray to see if Ive done any significant damage. What would your expert opinion be and what should I do to help my shoulder. I am a 42 yo female.

Thanks for your query.
From description it seems to be soft tissue injury . Large lump might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood).
You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury.
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.
Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid lifting weight and rest well.
