What Causes Swelling In Ankle With Dark Colored Skin On Calf And Shin?

My fiance has had multiple issues with his left knee, after 6 scopes, he is fi ally having a replacement in a few weeks. His knee continuously swells with large amounts of fluids, which causes calf and ankle/foot edema, often +2-3 pitting edema. As of late however, he has what appears to be a darkening of the skin along with areas of petichiae on his calf and shin. What could this be, do I need to take him to his surgeon or family doctor?
