What Causes Swelling In The Face?

My brother has woken up with one side of his face swollen three times in the last few weeks. He is 20 years old. He has seen a doctor each time and they tell him that it is an infection and give him antiboitics. The first two times it was on opposite sides of his face. I'm not sure which side the third time was on. I want to know if this could be due to some sort of drug usage. Could he be using something that could be doing this. I just want to be able to have an informed conversation with him if he might be using something extremely dangerous.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns.

As per your complain recurring swelling on the side of face that changes sides seems to be due to allergic reaction to some unknown allergen and it can be due to any food or medication, any cosmetic used on face while can also be due to drug abuse..
It does not seems to me like an infection as if it would have been due to infection it would have not switched sides of face..
I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get evaluated and it will be better if you go when the swelling is present..
If he suspects Allergic reaction then he will advise him to go for allergic tests like Patch test, RAST test and food challenge test to rule out the exact cause of allergic reaction and treat you accordingly..
In case of allergic reaction avoiding exposure to allergen can help..
He can also be advised to take anti allergics like Allegra or Levocetrizine to reduce the allergic symptoms.

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
