What Causes Swelling In The Leg And Ankle After Taking Blood Pressure Medications?

my brother is 54 years old.. has high blood pressure which he is currently taken medication for.. He has syptoms of swelling in his legs and ankles and is out of breath easliy... He is a heavy drinker and doesnt want to go to the Dr..I was wondering what may be a few things that could possibly be wrong that would make him go to the Dr,

There are a few possibilities. First, one might have heart or kidney disease which while helped by the medicine, may still cause fluid retention. Second, alcohol is both a lot of fluid and hard on the organs including the liver and this can cause fluid accumulation by multiple causes.

Then, blood pressure medicines can cause fluid retention. The most common is amlodipine and verapamil. These open up vessels. THe blood pools in the vessels, falls to the feet, and causes ankle swelling but does not usually cause anything worse than this.

Cannot say in his particular case, and these are causes to see the doctor.
