What Causes Swelling In The Lower Back And Hips?

Hullo, I am a 73 year old male. I fell off a ladder three weeks ago (21 Sep.). I was unable to get up due to severe back pain. A CatScan indicated a compression fracture in L1 also arthritis in the hips. I am recovering slowly. My guestion is: can this injury cause enough swelling in the lower back and hips to cause an increase of approximately two and one half inches in my waist? My waist has increased from 36.5 to 38.5 or two belt notches. Prior to the injury my weght was 200 pounds, I now weigh 202.2. Thank you

Hi,
Thanks for using HCM.
Spinal fractures mostly show pressure symptoms on nerves causing sensory & muscular problems. Swelling is not a regular feature of fracture of spine.
CT scan showing no other injury... the possible cause of so much of swelling would be excessive fomentation in early days... drawing more fluid * stimulating inflammatory reaction.
the swelling should go over the time , if there is no acute pain now... start with anti inflammatory medicine & mild stretches with/ orthopedic surgeon's & physiothrapist's advise /guidance..
