What Causes Swelling Of Ankles?

My brother , age 67, woke up this morning with a severe pain in his ankle,as if it were sprained. Swelling and difficult to walk. Iced it and elevated it and pain persisted when He lowered the ankle to the ground, however pain diminished later, but not completely. What could be the cause of this? Nothing occurred yesterday that would have caused this pain and swelling.

Hi,Thanks for your query. After going through your query I came to know that your brother got sever pain in ankle . You should rule out osteoarthritis by getting his x ray done. Treatment of it is analgesic such diclofenac as slow relief. But he also have swelling on lowering his ankle and it is reduced by elevation so so he should also get investigated for heart function and kidney function test. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it. I do hope that you have found something helpful. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries. Wishing you good health. Take care.
