What Causes Swelling On Finger After An Elbow Infection?

my boyfriend has a infection in/on his elbow. the doc seems to think it is staff, it is pushing out pus. but his arm from his elbow down to his fingers are swollen. and his fingers are darker then his other hand, he had a antibotic shot thurs night he took an antibotic pill thurs night and twice day since then, he has been keeping it bandage it while he works and sleeps . he has applied moist heat twice. do i need to take him to the er?
