What Causes Swollen Ankle And Feet After Taking Amlodipine Besylate?

I am taking a drug amlodipine besylate 10 mg for high blood pressure. My ankles and feet are swollen and my face is really flushed. It says that is some of the systems but my blood pressure is still running 170/70/. Should I stop taking this medicine and get a different one? Ina

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Swollen ankle and feet associated with flushing of the face are the common side effects of BP lowering medication Amlodipine. Your BP seems to be uncontrolled with Amlodipine and it has produced some unwanted side effects. You need to consult your treating doctor to rule out other causes of ankle edema like heart failure, kidney or liver disease. You may need a combination two antihypertensive such as Lisinopril with hydrochlorthiazide to control your high BP.

Hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. A feedback is appreciated.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
