What Causes Swollen Belly Post Spinal Surgery?

HI, I had major spinal surgery in March, on March 17, they went in my right side and broke up an existing L456 fusion. On the 20th, they opened my back and also my front, about 4 inches below belly button and almost all the way to my right, They fused L2 down to S1, also fixed endplates, disks and straightened out my crooked spine as best as they could. Since then my belly is so swollen I look like I am pregnant, like 6 to 7 months, I have had to buy all new clothes, etc, Will this swelling go away? I have been in PT for over 3 months now, for my legs and core.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I really appreciate your concern, if this is the abdominal distension, then it may not be due to spinal surgery but it may be something else. It may not be the swelling due to spinal surgery. If you are having normal defecation and voiding of urine, then no need to worry about this, because paralysis of guts being ruled out here. I would advise to discuss with the doctor for the abdominal distension.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
