What Causes Swollen Knee?

Its been 5 days now since I have had stitches in my knee. The gauze is stuck to the stitches. I was told not to get the area wet so I m a little hesitant to wet the gauze to remove it. My knee is very swollen but I don t think it s infected. Can I redress the area and what can I do to reduce the swelling?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
I would suggest you to go the doctor and get dressing done. You are right in thinking that ordinary water can not be applied to this as it may cause infection.Doctor do dressings with the help of spirit and betadine and it will be better healed if taken care of by a trained person. Meanwhile you should take antibiotis also.
