What Causes The Problem In Losing Weight In A 26 Year Old?

I am a 26 year old female.
I previously followed the medifast diet and lost 40 lbs. I went off that and gained back about 20 - 30 lbs. I yo-yo dieted trying this and that, and lost 10-15 lbs and reached my current weight 188. For the previous 6 - 8 months, or more, I have been eating between 1000 - 1200 calories a day, which I realize is not sufficient. I have not been able to lose ANYTHING, the most I was able to do is maintain. For the past week I have been eating between 1300 - 1500 calories a day to try to get my body to kick into weight loss mode again, and have gained 2 lbs. I am 188 lbs and should have no problem losing weight. What could be the problem? I'm meticulous about counting my calories. I've considered the possibility of my body being in starvation mode, I've also considered the possibility of a thyroid problem, but I have no family history of thyroid problems. What could be wrong with me?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

It is not advisable to take any pills or supplement for losing weight because:
1. The medications interfere with the normal metabolic rate of the body & causes a number of side effects
2. The individual tends to gain more weight after stoppage of the medication.

Before choosing any such medication, it is advisable to consult your family physician once.

For effective weight control, equal importance should be given to both diet & exercise.
So, a low calorie low fat diet and regular exercise should be followed such as:

1. Avoid eating white breads, rice and pasta. They have high calories and increases the blood sugar level.
2. It is better to have complex carbohydrates such as whole wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice.
3. Consume low fat versions of milk and cheese and avoid oily foods.
4. Have a diet rich in low calorie protein foods such as egg whites, skinless chicken, fish, etc.
5. It is better to avoid soft drinks and fruit juices which are rich in calories.
Instead, drink large amount of water (about 6 to 8 glasses) throughout the day.
6. Dietary fiber such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts can also be included in the diet.

If you still find any difficulty, kindly get certain investigations like estimation of blood pressure & blood sugar levels, Thyroid profile & Lipid profile to rule out any pathological cause.

Wishing you a Good Health.
Take care.
