What Causes Thigh Aches While Sleeping?

I am 47 and pretty healthy. For the last 4 years I off and on wake up at night because the top of my thigh aches. i feel it no other time. So strange. Will this worsen as I get older and do I need to see a particular type of doctor? I m thinking there is no magical solution and will have to live with it. But what exactly is happening at night to cause this ache??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms are probably related to a pinched nerve. The condition is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which supplies sensation to the upper leg. I suggest using anti inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen to relieve the symptoms. I also suggest to prevent movement of the leg that can cause further damage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
