What Causes Tightness In The Achilles Tendons And Calf Muscles?

Hello. I am a 52 year old woman, in good health in general. I have always been very flexible, but recently I started to have a lot of tightness in my Achilles tendons and calf muscles. I am now constantly trying to stretch them out so that I can walk with normal flexibility. What is going on? What can I do?
Thank you!

Sorry to hear about your problem.
Going by the description that you have given, it looks like there are one or two possibilities. The first is achilles tendinitis which can present with pain and tightness on the back of the leg and ankle area, especially after a period of inactivity like sitting for a while or after waking in the morning. The other possibility is an incompetent venous system in the leg.Incompetence of venous system means blood flowing from deep to superficial veins because of non-functioning valves.Normally flow of blood in veins is from superficial to deep.
To diagnose the first you might require an x ray but a competent orthopaedician can diagnose the problem. Based on findings in your x ray and clinical examination, treatment will hinge of physiotherapy to stretch the muscles
, a nocturnal(night) splint to be worn at bedtime, and heel raise in your foot wear may be required. If proven as the cause, a gastrocnemius resection may be required if all else fails as outlined above.
For the latter you might require a colour doppler or duplex scan. If you have early venous incompetence, then wearing class II or class III stockings upto groin will help.

Hope this helps
