What Causes Unexplained Weight Gain After A Hernia Operation?

My husband had a hernia operation yesterday morning and is now concerned because he said he weighs 6 pounds more today than he did before. Is this normal? He hasn t had a bowel movement since the surgery. He just thinks 6 pounds is too much of a difference.

Hi,
It could be possible to gain weight after surgery because of complete bed rest and taking nutritious diet in order to have rapid recovery post surgery.
Now,bowel movement could be delayed because of loss of normal bowel movements as a result of surgery but it would come back within 24-48 hours.
There is no need to worry because this is very much normal after any abdominal surgery.
After complete follow-up and treatment,you can start mild exercises as per your surgeons advise to lose this extra weight.
Consult your operating surgeon for further advise.
