What Causes Unusual Taste In Mouth On Being Diagnosed With Diabetes?

My mom is 69, recently diagnosed with sugar diabetes. She is controlling this with a pill but is telling me she has a taste in her mouth similar to an artificial sweetener aftertaste. This taste makes her not want to eat very much. She has lost about 10lbs. She saw her doctor recently who said her sugar level was good, but she didn't relay this symptom to him. I worked for an M.D. for a number of years and I seem to remember this being a significant symptom of something, but can't recall exactly what. PLEASE HELP. Thanks, Denise

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per you complain a sweet taste in mouth of a diabetic can occur when the blood sugar level rises above the threshhold value leading to more glucose in saliva which can lead to a sweet taste..

Other reason can be that in case of diabetics the fat is broken down as a source of energy and there is formation of ketone bodies and they have a sweet taste and a fruity smell..
It can be a reason for sweet taste in mouth..

I would suggest you to consult a Diabetologist and get her Fasting, post prandial(post meal) and Glycosylated Haemoglobin levels checked to evaluate the exact values of her blood glucose levels and Glycosylated Haemoglobin levels explain the blood glucose status for last three consecutive months ..

In case of high levels of blood glucose increase in dose of medication and adding other hypoglycemic drugs can help..

Cutting down on carbohydrates and direct sugar sources and increase in fibre and low carbohydrate diet can help..

Hope this helps..

Thanks and regards..
