What Causes Urge To Defecate Along With Soft Stools?

My husband has been bedridden for over 3 months. He had a leg amputation and a bi-pass in the other leg. He had many infections and surgeries as well. He is now having bowel movements in his diaper, however they seem to be very small. He feels there is a bowel movement there, but when his caregiver tries to change it, there is nothing there. He is somewhat obsessing over it. I suggest he try to sit up on bed pan ad push it out, but he doesn t think that will help. It was waking him him up every few hours at night - it would come out soft, but not runny. He is taking 250mg Levaquin and I just stopped the neurontin. What other suggestions would you have?

Thanks for your query.
Noted your history about your husband being bedridden for 3 months due to leg amputation and bypass in other leg. He has got the urge to defecate but there is either nothing in the diaper or if at all passes soft stool.
This is called a perineal descending syndrome or can be due to IBS that is common with so much physical and mental trauma.
I would advise you the following for your husband.
Send the sample of stool for tests and if infection, give him antibiotics or continue Levaquin.
It is worth talking to his Doctor to see if the treatment for IBS works.
See and observe what in the diet causing this and stop all such goods and beverages that is causing the symptoms.
