What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhea In A Child?

my 2 yr old daughter was vomiting and had diarrhea a wwek ago and it went ok for 4 days and just recently she was vomiting and we took her to the doctor and the doctor said that they think she has stomach flu. she doesn t like to eat and has a very few liquid intake. she only drinks wen she s extremely thirsty and would only drink about 5-10 ml... mostly water only. I would just like to know if there are other causes for this as she is not like this not lively and inactive. she usually runs around screaming laughing playful every minute that she was awake when shes doesn t have any illness..

Hi,

It seems your kid is having viral diarrhea. Once it starts it will take 5-7 days to completely get better. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

There is no need to use antibiotics unless there is blood in the motion. Antibiotics might worsen if unnecessarily used causing antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops) & ORS as hydration is a very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your pediatrician).

Regarding diet - You can use cerelac...any flavour will do. Avoid fruit juices as they might aggravate diarrhea. You can give zinc supplements & ORS apart from normal vegetarian porridges & soups.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
